Wintersweet is a fragrant deciduous shrub with delicate translucent flowers that appear in the winter and spring months. This medium to coarse textured plant can grow in a range of soil conditions as long as it is moist and well-drained but should be planted in full sun to partial shade.
This vigorous shrub will usually take a few years to start to flower, but they are well worth the wait and they will make a lovely specimen plant for a sunny, well-drained mixed or winter border.
Pour one cup of very warm tap water over seed and soak 2-3 hours. Sow, barely covering seed, and tamp soil. Give 30 days cold moist stratification. Plastic cover greatly improves success.
Besides its unusual habit of blooming when it's cold, this plant has another attribute: the scent of the flowers, fully open, is remarkable: a sweet sort of lemony fragrance, very delicate. The scent reminds me a bit of hyacinths with some rose thrown in.. . . . .364011234511!]0000000000000009783314147503!]
